Anabel Encarnacion to Participate in Summer Research Internship at St. Lawrence University

2016 Jun 17

Anabel A. Encarnacion of Bronx, a St. Lawrence University Ronald E. McNair Post Baccalaureate Achievement Program scholar, has been awarded a faculty-mentored research internship for summer 2016.

Encarnacion is a member of the Class of 2017 and is majoring in environmental studies. She attended Academy for Social Action. Encarnacion will work with Dr. Jenny Su, assistant professor of psychology, on a project titled, "Cultural Identification Among First Generation College Youth of Historically Low-Status Group in the American Higher Education System".

McNair scholars will complete a faculty-mentored research project, develop oral and poster presentations and prepare for graduate school admissions tests. Throughout the summer, scholars will participate in Community of Graduate Scholars seminars, where they will develop their writing skills, work with faculty and staff on graduate school application documents, and learn how to navigate the graduate school interview process. Scholars will also attend a professional etiquette dinner and participate in volunteer activities with the Grasse River Heritage Group.

The McNair Scholars Program is a federally funded TRIO program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. It is named in honor of Ronald E. McNair, a pioneer African American astronaut who died in the 1986 Space Shuttle Challenger explosion. The McNair program is designed to motivate and support students who are underrepresented in graduate education, who meet economic eligibility requirements and who may be the first in their families to attend college. The program is also meant to increase attainment of doctoral degrees by students from underrepresented groups.
