Bayard Roberts of Glen Ridge Receives Moving-Up Day Award at St. Lawrence University

2014 May 14

Bayard B. Roberts of Glen Ridge received an award at St. Lawrence University's Moving-Up Day ceremony, which was held on April 26 in Canton, N.Y. Roberts is majoring in . A member of the Class of 2017 at St. Lawrence, Roberts graduated from Glen Ridge High School.

Roberts was presented with the Linda Reeves Pettit Endowed Merit Scholarship 2014, which is named in honor of St. Lawrence University’s vice president for University advancement from 1996 to 2001. This scholarship is funded by an endowment established by the Board of Trustees and Linda’s friends to fulfill her wish that we recognize a special kind of St. Lawrence student—juniors or seniors who did not qualify for a merit award on entry into St. Lawrence, but who have blossomed and, in Linda’s words, found “their academic passion,” with high academic achievement, during their years with us.

Moving-Up Day celebrates student achievements in academics and co-curricular activities. It is a campus tradition dating from 1869, when it began as "Tree Holiday," to add trees to the campus landscape. In more recent times, the day evolved into an occasion for the recognition of student achievement and a symbolic "moving-up" of students to chapel pews vacated by students a year ahead of them.
