Raina Puels of Dexter Receives Moving-Up Day Award at St. Lawrence University

2014 May 14

Raina K. Puels of Dexter received an award at St. Lawrence University's Moving-Up Day ceremony, which was held on April 26 in Canton, N.Y. Puels is majoring in English. A member of the Class of 2016 at St. Lawrence, Puels graduated from General Brown Jr-Sr High School.

Puels was presented with the Presidential Diversity Scholar, which was established to increase student diversity by facilitating the enrollment of students of African-American, Asian-American, Hispanic American and Native American backgrounds and to provide opportunities for diverse cultural initiatives on and off campus for the recipients. Awards will be presented to current scholars with the highest GPA in their class.

Moving-Up Day celebrates student achievements in academics and co-curricular activities. It is a campus tradition dating from 1869, when it began as "Tree Holiday," to add trees to the campus landscape. In more recent times, the day evolved into an occasion for the recognition of student achievement and a symbolic "moving-up" of students to chapel pews vacated by students a year ahead of them.
