Several local students studied in Ethiopia this summer as participants in St. Lawrence University's Summerterm course there. In the course Ethiopia: Ecology, Knowledge and Women, students looked at how household arrangements, community organizations and regional trade networks are activated in concert to mitigate the conflicting structures of the global economy, particularly as they affect women. Participants in the program took two courses, Nationalism, Peace, and Conflict; and Literature, Popular Memory and Place. Several local students studied in Denmark this summer, participating in the St. Lawrence University course The Neuroscience of Fear. In the three-week course, students explored the evolutionary aspects of the fear response and how it ties into decision-making and our everyday lives, synthesizing recent work from the fields of biology, psychology, neuroscience and philosophy. Participants in the course explored the cultural ecology of the present-day Yucatec Maya, their adaptation to a unique trpoical forest environment, and their links to a still little-understood past involving environmental change. The following area students have been have been selected as scholars in the Ronald E. McNair Post Baccalaureate Achievement Program at St. Lawrence University for 2012. The program encourages the pursuit of doctoral study by involving students in multiple research-intensive experiences and providing extensive advising by faculty mentors.
